The actions today by members of the NYPD and other police agencies at the instigation of New York Police unions are both saddening and angering. Those actions were nothing less than politicizing an officers death to feed the oversized ego of union leader Flynn. Rather than leading to reconciliation with a community that sees itself victimized by police, they widened the gulf and made the job of rank and file officers more dangerous. They have explicitly declared themselves to be beyond criticism by either citizens or elected representatives. Those protesting excessive police violence, particularly the unjustifiable killing of Eric Garner did not create an atmosphere that led to those two officers deaths. Mayor deBlasio giving his African-American son the same warnings given by millions of parents of African-American boys and young men or his calls for police to treat citizens with respect did not lead to the deaths. There is only one person responsible for those killings, an unbalanced, unstable, criminal who had already attempted one murder, completely unconnected to law enforcement, and who somehow managed to get his hands on a gun.
