The advertiser on tuesday the 28th of Jan had an article about the crisis hotlines and how people are waiting more than an hour to speak to professionals on the key support hotlines. The longest time that someone in south Australia had to wait for one of the crisis hotlines in the past year was 77 minutes and 42 seconds. Theres are some statistics from the article! Official figures show almost a fifth more south australians aged younger that 14 have contacted the lifeline suicide prevention hotline in one year. Almost 78,000 south australians rang the hotline last year as more people struggled to cope with financial pressures and relationship break downs. Nationally more than 8200 teenaged aged up to 19 called the hotline last year-almost 2000 more than the previous 12 months. More young people ages up to 14 called, with almost 1000 seeking help last year compared with almost 600 in the previous year. Lifeline said that the peak period was between 7:30am and 9:30pm ( 8pm to 10pm east coast time) during which those seeking help experienced an average waiting time of 4 minutes and 18 seconds. The average wait over the past year was 2 minutes and 55 seconds, compared to 4 minutes and 34 seconds in 2012. The advertiser called the hotline a fortnight ago, it was more than 20 minutes before an operator was available to speak.
