The advocacy of Baliklaya organization to help, support, and give hope to the inmates/convicted prisoners in the Philippine National Bilibid Prison for a second life chance is worth emulating. My contribution to their cause was nothing compare to the time, effort, money and support that these students have invested for many years, simply because they firmly believe that those inmates/convicted prisoners deserve a second life chance. I did the talk about effective communications through body language, but I was elated when I got the chance to talk to the inmates individually. Their stories are heartbreaking. Others repented for the crime/sin committed while others claimed their innocence. Whatever and whoever told the truth, only God will know. There were about 14K plus in the maximum prison (20 years up to lifetime sentence), 6k plus in the medium prison (less than 20 years in prison), 400 for parole and elderly, 1k plus for diagnostic examination and 60 inmates below 18 years in the medium prison. Can we at least do our share to save 1 soul from these numbers? I wish and pray that there will be more organizations, foundations and individual donors who are willing to share even a pinch of what they have. More than the donation and scholarship, they need our presence to talk to them, to feel that they still exist especially those who were never been visited by their own family. If not your presence, at least our prayers. Yes for others, this act might be wrong but for us/those like Baliklaya who believe that these inmates deserve a second life chance, this is the right time to change stereotyping attitude. I will always be proud of you Lite Villanueva because instead of spending 1 of your weekends in Malls, or sleeping or playing, you and your group choose to be with the inmates and share what you have.
