The ambitions of the Honda riders on this Dakar are mainly focused on ending the domination of KTM. However, whilst all eyes will be on the official Japanese team led by Joan Barreda, another team based around three leading South American riders is intending for the red bikes to dazzle on the tracks and dunes of their continent. Brazilian Jean De Azevedo, Argentinean Javier Pizzolito and Chilean Daniel Gouet have all featured in the top 10 at a given moment in their career and are counting on this new team to enable them to move up the standings. In any case, this is the wish of Gouet, who also faces the difficult question of conquering the leadership in the Chilean clan following the announcement Francisco “Chaleco” Lopezs retirement: “Im not going to heap pressure on myself, but its true that the competition is very tough. At any rate, I reckon I can do better than my 8th place last year. For the moment, Ive only tried the bike in training, but it has an excellent feeling”. With three riders of this calibre, as well as two fine water carriers, Pablo Rodriguez and Demian Guiral, the South American Hondas will surely be a force to be reckoned with!
