The amoeba is found in warm freshwater and soil. It enters through the nose and travels up to the brain where it begins to feed on brain tissue. This rare condition is known as primary amoebic meningoencephalitis (PAM) and is almost always fatal. After almost a month on a ventilator while undergoing experimental treatment, Kali has been cleared of the parasite and is now able to write her name and respond to others.
