The ancient Maya believed caves were portals to the underworld. Over recent years, archaeologists have explored a giant limestone cave in the jungle of western Belize where, in an inner chamber, 14 skeletons have been found including one female dubbed the Crystal Maiden. Excavators believe they were sacrifices, given to the spirits of the underworld in a time of crisis. The link provides a gallery of pictures.
