The angry young man by his friend’s memorial (What my sheep and calves and Fleecey witnessed.) ------------------------------------------------------- Your friend was killed on Point Robinson road And standing there Your face flashed a lightening glance That struck home and splintered deep my Cedar soul. You in fierce spring Defiant and strong Having never experienced this before The taking of a young person Tree to fall before the canopy is reached To lie as an infant nursery log In the deep and callous mulch The storm cracked branches around you. I watched it pass. you sat down the rain came pattering on you and The knarled old ones standing here around you Who sighed and held out ancient aching limbs That had felt the gales and soft feet of the thrush. You looked up and saw me standing there And all I could do, young man Is walk over and hand you my heart Because I too wintered in this place
