The anniversary of H.E. Chagdud Rinpoches Paranirvana-17th November 2002. I am reflecting on the first time I ever met Chagdud Rinpoche it was in the mid 70s I was introduced to him when he lived with his former wife and 2 kids Jigme Rinpoche and Dawa Lama they all lived together in a small room in Bir Community in HP India. When I arrived to meet Rinpoche I was told he was in the kitchen and so I went there and the first time I saw him he was holding a large leg of raw lamb in one hand and on the table he had a can with (Tsampa) Barley flour and some butter inside and he ever so gently was taking all the maggots that were living on the meat and putting them into the can with flour and butter so they would not die. This meant that he and his family also had something to eat - they were so poor in those days just living from hand to mouth . So Rinpoche was not going to let go of the leg of lamb so easily-he just looked up at me and all he kept saying was not enough salt, not enough salt-I did not understand till he explained later that in Tibet they just kept the meat under the bed as it was so cold but when they arrived in India the meat had to be salted well as they had no refridgeraters then-so he was telling me that he had not put enough salt on the meat to preserve it the way it needed to be so the flies would not lay their eggs on it- After he had removed on all the maggots so gently and carefully he looked at his prize and then looked at me and asked would you like a piece? I replied politely no thank you Rinpoche That was my first meeting with this great master who inspired me so much over the years as both my friend and one of my principal teachers
