The answer to yesterdays Law Quiz is: True. Last year the Supreme Court of Canada ruled that “marital status” under the Ontario Human Rights Code includes the particular and singular identity of one’s spouse. Even though Marco was not fired because of being married in general, but rather because his wife happened to be the boss’s daughter, he can successfully bring a human rights complaint. Without, hopefully, appearing too critical of the Supreme Court of Canada’s decision, I would note that it is ironic that Marco likely got the job in the first place because of the particular identity of his spouse. Losing it for the same reason does not seem that unfair to me. That, however, is the law. Thanks for playing and join us for another Law I.Q. quiz next week. hummingbirdlaw
