The art of glass blowing is at least 2000 years old and, in that time, the basic tool kit and technique have changed very little. Hand blown glass pieces are often functional as well as beautiful. Heres how you can tell if your family heirloom or flea market find is hand blown glass. Tip for Tuesday: The telltale signs of hand blown glass are... 1. A small mark or bulge (known as the pontil or rod mark) where the glass piece was separated from the blowpipe. 2. Small bubbles. Some very fine art glass may not have any bubbles but most will. 3. Slight imperfections. Even the most talented artisans cant produce the precision shape and uniform size of machine-made glass. Thats a good thing: its the sign of a one of a kind item. For a short demonstration on the art of glass blowing, watch this video from our friends at the Chrysler Museum of Art in Norfolk, Virginia. youtube/watch?v=XxgIEeIBCFo
