The article, and the comments, miss the point: movies are multimillion dollar ventures, theyre only about speculating when thats likely to turn a profit. As for SF not caring, this commentator fails to understand: real speculation about the future is happening, but its happening in the Indie Science Fiction/Speculative Fiction genres. We (yeah, Im one; I publish as Jack L Knapp on Amazon and other outlets) invest only our time, mostly, and sometimes money for covers and advertising and editing. We can tell stories that deal with the effects of various things on society. On what happens if paranormal abilities begin to become less-unusual. On a world where there IS no society, where it has to be invented. On a future when we finally encounter a society thats more advanced than we are..and which totally ignores our existence. Other writers have their own stories to tell, their own what-if speculations, but we dont have to churn out a plot that will appeal to the lowest common denominator among audiences. As a general rule, we dont get rich. Shucks, we may not even get readers, but that doesnt mean were not blazing trails alongside the ones taken by the pioneers of SF. We usually dont do fan-fiction, write in someone elses world, which is what the film is doing. No lightsabers. No droids. Not even a Jabba the Hutt. But lack of popularity doesnt equate to lack of interest in doing what those pioneers did, go more-or-less boldly where no one had gone before. As for the new version of Star Wars, its not bold, not intended to be. The original film was. All the additional iterations, they were speculative only in how much profit the films were expected to generate.
