The attached snowfall forecast shows slightly increased snowfall amounts for Eastern and Southern Connecticut. Blizzard Warnings are now in effect for the entire state. At 6:45 PM radar showed light to occasionally moderate snow moving from Southeast to Northwest across the state. Some roads in southern Connecticut are becoming snow covered with a few inches of dry snow. Temperatures are currently in the low to mid 20s with North to Northeast winds at 15 - 30 MPH. The following forecast is based on a blend of the NAM, GFS and EURO models (most likely scenario): This evening...The snow is forecast to pick up in intensity over the next several hours along with increasing Northeast winds. Driving conditions will begin to deteriorate quickly during the next few hours. Tonight...The storm will rapidly intensify as it turns due north later this evening. The snow is forecast to become heavy (snowfall rates 2 - 5 per hour) around midnight with strong NE winds gusting to 40 MPH inland and 60 MPH at the coast. Near blizzard or blizzard conditions can be expected overnight with temperatures in the upper teens and wind chills near 0 F. Considerable blowing and drifting of snow is expected with a major impact on all travel. The strong winds may also cause some power outages especially along the coast and in the higher terrain. Tuesday...Blizzard conditions thru the morning (snowfall rates up to 4 per hour) with the snow intensity lessening to a moderate level around noontime. Towns along the coast may experience minor to pockets of moderate flooding during the morning high tide at 5:00 AM in Western Long Island Sound. For the afternoon moderate snow and strong winds are expected to continue with North gusts to 40 MPH inland and 55 MPH at the coast. Considerable blowing and drifting of snow with highs only in the low 20s. A major impact is expected on all travel during the day. Tuesday Night...Snow ending around midnight with total accumulations ranging between 24 - 32 (locally higher amounts near 40 are possible in any heavier snow bands that develop especially in Southern and Eastern CT). The Department of Emergency Services and Public Protection Division of Emergency Management and Homeland Security will continue to closely monitor this storm. DEMHS will be sending out updates at 2-hour intervals for the duration of this blizzard. #shelton #blizzard.
