The bacteriophage that was isolated is hoped to be used to combat Clostridium difficile. C. diff is highly contagious and causes diarrhea and inflammation of the colon which can become life-threatening. While antibiotics have saved countless lives since their discovery, bacteria replicate quickly and mutations can lead to drug resistance, so other treatment options need to be explored to tackle these superbugs.
