The bad news: The Harper Conservatives used their majority in the House of Commons this week to shut down debate and pass Bill C-23, the Unfair Elections Act. The good news: Despite the government’s insistence that the bill was “fantastic”, thousands of Canadians who care about democracy pushed back and eventually the Conservatives were forced to make some important amendments they clearly didn’t want to make. Our democracy owes a debt to every single person who spoke out. In the face of a government that made it clear it wasn’t budging, so many people took action anyway, because it was the right thing to do. Make no mistake, the bill is still bad, but before the changes it was a lot worse. I’m also proud of the great work NDP leader Thomas Mulcair did leading the defense of democracy in the House of Commons. Along with public engagement, robust media coverage, and expert testimony, I believe a strong and relentless opposition by the NDP has played an important role in preventing the Conservatives from forcing the bill through in its original form.
