The battle of Christmas begin: the Pandoro vs Panettone; which one is your favourite? A hard question divides Italian every year during Christmas holidays: Panettone or Pandoro? This is a real dilemma in many Italian families, often split between Panettone lovers and Pandoro lovers. The first faction finds Pandoro to be too simple and buttery, the second group usually hates raisins and candied fruits which abound in Panettone. so, after speaking about the Panettone, now we speak about Pandoro: Pandoro: The Pandoro (golden bread) is a traditional Christmas cake (like Panettone) made only with flour, butter and eggs, which was originally produced in Verona. Verona is not only the town where the first pandoro was made, but remains the place most associated with this delicious creation. The Pandoro is also associated to a famous cake typically linked to wealthy families of the Venice Republic during the Renaissance. This cake, the pan de oro, or “bread of gold,” was covered in thin, gold leaves. The pandoro as we know it today was also most certainly inspired by a star-shaped cake known as the nadalin, which was prepared by some families in Verona in the 1800s. In fact, the pandoro even keeps the star shape of the nadalin alive. Pandoro is made with flour, butter and eggs (nothing else). The yellow or golden color comes from the large amount of egg yolks that are in the bread. Pandoro is baked in a special star-shaped mold. Unlike panettone, pandoro does not contain any dried fruits or nuts. When sprinkled with confectioners’ sugar, it has the appearance of fallen snow on a mountain. Pandoro may be served with many types of creams or sauces, such as mascarpone topping, melted chocolate or Nutella or flavored whipped cream. It can also be served with the top sliced off, hollowed out, and filled with ice cream or custard. Pandoro can be sliced into vertical wedges or cut horizontally into star-shaped slices. Horizontally cut slices can be arranged into a beautiful Christmas-tree shaped presentation. Pandoro or Panettone, have you decided ?
