“The beginning of the cause of the Deaths in Custody does not - TopicsExpress

“The beginning of the cause of the Deaths in Custody does not occur within the confines of the police and prison cells or in the mind of the victims. Initially, it starts in the minds of these who allow it to happen”. Dr. Jack Davis, Aboriginal Elder. HELP TO RESTART THE NATIONAL CAMPAIGN AGAINST DEATH IN CUSTODY! SUPPORT THE NATIONAL DAY OF ACTION ON THE 30 YEARS OF THE KILLING OF JOHN PAT! THE NATIONAL COALITION TO STOP DEATH IN CUSTODY HAS BEEN REBORN!... John Pat died 30 years ago in Roeburne, WA, at the hands of 5 drunken police officers. He jumped in defense of a local Yindjibarnie boy, and the drunken criminals punched him to the death. He was 16 years old. 3 years later an all-white jury acquitted the police officers. His death sparked the rallies that imposed the royal commission. The Royal Commission made more than three hundred recommendations. Some government’s accepted few, but the strong campaign by the police and the state police associations made these recommendations to be forgotten and never applied. So the number of deaths started to multiply. The increased number of arrest and imprisonment of Aboriginal people is helping to the carnage. And as in John Pat case, NO POLICE OR PRISSON OFFICER OR EVEN ANY MDEICAL STAFF HAS BEEN EVER FOUND TO BEAR ANY RESPOSABILITY IN MORE OF 300 DEATH IN CUSTODY SINCE THE ROYAL COMMISION. So, a national body has begun to coordinate actions to stop deaths in custody. With the blessing of Mavis Pat, mother of John, we intend to start this camping on the 30 anniversary of his death. In Sydney, at 12.00, on Saturday September 28th, we will be gathering at Town Hall, to march to the Circular Quay, as the old marchers use to do. We will be there with John Pat but also with other hundreds of dead, TJ, Mulrunji, Eddy Murray, Mr Ward, Mr Briscoe, and Veronica Baxter, to name some. However we will be demanding justice for every Death in Custody, the creation of an independent body, independent of the police, the governments and courts, and capable to reach to the bottom of the racist and corrupt culture that exist in the police and other government organizations.
