The bells are carried after the victory of Peshwas/ Marathas over the Portuguese, when there was no concept of religious equality and in fact the Portuguese were forcibly converting the local people in to christianity, which forced the Marathas/ Peshwas to liberate the local people from the clutches of Portuguese. One should not equate the present concept of religious equality to the centuries old fault done by the foreign missionaries.
