The best-laid plans of mice and men / Often go awry is a paraphrase of a Scottish poem written in 1785 by Robert Burns. In spite of all our preparation and planning in life, sometimes “stuff happens! This event is completely unexpected and certainly unwelcome in our lives. It may totally be “not your fault” or of your choosing, but truly now, has become “your problem”. It is at that point you do have a choice. You can pick up the pieces, do the best you can, and move forward OR you can grumble and fuss as you look backward upon the past and the events leading up to this as well as look forward with trepidation, as you don’t truly know what the future holds. This is where the mouse has the advantage. For he spends no time looking upon the past or worried that the future is uncertain. He focuses on the mission at hand and does his best, knowing that at times, “stuff happens”. When it does happen, he simply scurries about and fixes it.
