The best part about living in Alaska is that you never know when - TopicsExpress

The best part about living in Alaska is that you never know when the next adventure is going to happen. Sometimes those adventures are planned outings, or developed from unplanned or under-planned outings, but sometimes it happens simply by going to work or coming home. I left my dogs (Shadow & Kobuk) at the folks over the weekend while we attended the last weekend at camp. Last night after work I went out to the homestead to get the dogs. The fall colors were in full bloom, the river was running slow, low and clear-ish (which is normal for this time of year), and the sweet scent of decaying leaves was in the air. Lucky for you, I brought my camera and took some pictures which I will load tonight. The dogs were happy to see me and so was Mom, but I couldnt go out there without taking a look around. While Mom and I talked we gazed out over the river and watched a bald eagle and a peregrine falcon flying with each other. It was not a friendly interaction, nor overly hostile. From what I gathered the falcon was not happy that the eagle was near its nest but eventually the falcon flew off in a huff. Unfortunately both birds of prey flew off before I could get my camera out to take a picture. Once I got out my camera I started taking all kinds of pictures of the changing fall colors. Eventually I took the dogs down the road to the old Teases boat dock to check on the beavers. The dogs and the beavers had fun teasing each other, the beavers staying safely in the water while the dogs ran along the shoreline. One beaver would distract the dogs while another beaver stealthily continued their business down stream. I believe there is a family of four beavers but I was only able to see three. At one point, Im pretty certain I heard the beaver vocalizing with Shadow. An old native elder who lived in the area, Howard Luke, used to tell us when we were kids to be careful of beavers because they will whisper to you. Unfortunately I do not speak beaver and neither do my dogs. Both dogs ended up getting in the water, much to my dismay, since I still had a long ride home with them. Kobuk did not want to leave, I guess the beavers were too interesting to leave behind. Im just thankful that beavers are vegetarians considering how much bigger they are than Kobuk. The sun was beginning to set and so I knew I had to leave and take these two excited, but wet dogs, home. Lucky for me I have fake leather seats (made from the hides of the finest nauga), and I had brought blankets to cover the seats. The dogs were pretty exhausted and so was I from all the walking around I did. All in all I saw a bald eagle, a peregrine falcon, a duck, and three beavers. Not a bad adventure for just going home.
