"The biggest chunk of the organization’s $400,000 operating budget, or about $190,000, comes from Centraide." - MONTREAL — Used to be, the emergency food baskets were made behind the scenes at the NDG Food Depot — which meant that people did not know in advance what would be in those baskets. “People wouldn’t see what was happening,” said executive director Kimberly Martin. Now the food is set out in a large hall — and people get to choose, for instance, what kind of soup or beans they want. “We are always looking at how can we make our services more dignified,” Martin said. The emergency food basket program, now in its 27th year, provides food for about 700 people each week. People who live in the sector can come in twice each month for two days worth of food. From the 2010-11 to the 2012-13 fiscal year, there was an 11-per-cent increase in their numbers.
