The book was named after it’s main character Esther. Originally known as Hadassah in Hebrew, The name Esther is of Persian origin which means “myrtle leaf” or possibly, ‘stars”. Hadassah was a young beautiful Hebrew lady who was carried along into captivity with her senior cousin Mordecai, and was given the name Esther while the Israelites lived in Persia as captives. The book of Esther is the 17th book of the Bible in the order of arrangement from Genesis. It comes after Nehemiah but comes before the book of Job. It records a remarkable event which happened in the life of the Israelites while in captivity and shows God’s supremacy in the affairs of men.
