The boss of EastEnders is quitting amid a run of poor ratings for the BBC1 soap. Executive producer Lorraine Newman – at the helm of the show for 16 months – will move elsewhere in the Beeb’s drama department. Speculation about her position has been rife, particularly after a string of bad ratings including a dip below five million last week. Insiders said boosting the show was a priority for new BBC1 controller Charlotte Moore. Show sources insisted Newman’s departure was not connected to ratings and said she had lined up a strong autumn for EastEnders. This included the return of stars such as Barbara Windsor, Michael French and Sam Womack and storylines such as Phil Mitchell’s car crash. Lorraine, who has worked on the soap for 23 years in various roles, will be replaced by former EastEnders producer Dominic Treadwell-Collins. She said: “I am confident I am leaving the show in a stronger place and am sure Dominic will continue to build upon this, taking the show to a new level.”
