“The bottom line is that if Republicans gain control of the Senate, they would be able to pass legislation weakening Social Security and Medicare and then hold America hostage until President Obama complies with their demands. This cannot be allowed to happen. Social Security and Medicare should remain strong government programs. They shouldn’t be privatized and given to fat cat tycoons to use as gambling money. Americans pay into both programs and work hard in the hopes of one day retiring with the knowledge that the money they contributed to these programs will be there to help them in their golden years. The very suggestion of messing with these programs should guarantee defeat for the GOP in any election. As President Dwight Eisenhower once said: “Should any political party attempt to abolish social security, unemployment insurance and eliminate labor laws and farm programs, you would not hear of that party again in our political history. There is a tiny splinter group, of course, that believes that you can do these things. Among them are a few Texas oil millionaires, and an occasional politician or businessman from other areas. Their number is negligible and they are stupid.”’
