The captain of the River Queen told me a story today that I have - TopicsExpress

The captain of the River Queen told me a story today that I have to share. At one time, steamboats were more abundant and used for transportation and cruising. Since the boats were powered by wood, then coal and finally oil, the smoke coming out of the smoke stacks was also accompanied by ash that would often get on its passengers. They figured out that if you built *higher* smoke stacks, then the smoke and ash would rise up higher and not get on the passengers. Of course, you had to PAY more to travel on an ash-free boat. And if you could afford to travel on a boat with higher smoke stacks ~ with their fluted tops ~ you must be pretty high falutin. And now you know the rest of the story!
