The case of unlucky winner. The Committee on the Rizal Monument - TopicsExpress

The case of unlucky winner. The Committee on the Rizal Monument held an international design competition between 1905-1907. The contract, however, was ultimately awarded to Swiss sculptor Richard Kissling, for his Bozeto titled Motto Stella (Guiding Star), which had won second place. Nicoli was reportedly not able to put up the construction bond required to build the monument. Still others claimed his design was deemed too expensive as it used carrara marble. Forty entries were received by 1901 deadline, and the bozetos (scale models) of the shortlisted ten were displayed at the Ayuntamiento in Intramuros. Upon deliberation the Committee on the Rizal Monument declared the Al Martir de Bagumbayan ( To the Martyr of Bagumbayan), an ornate neoclassical piece, the winner of the design competition. The design of carols Nicoli of Carra, Italy was awarded the first prize worth P5,000. His design depicted an 18m-tall monument , with its 12m base rendered in two shades of gray Italian marble, and the pedestal that held the entire structure to be rendered in two shades of white Italian marble. Elaborate figurative elements dominated Nicolis design.
