The centurion acknowledged and accepted the power and authority of Jesus over life and death. He was sure that the word of Jesus will effect the result he so desired without Jesus coming to do the personal touch. We relate to God, to Jesus because we are in need, like the centurion. Yet the centurion allowed Jesus to be God, he also allowed himself to be fully under the mercy of Jesus. Jesus need not come but only say the word and its done. In our relationship with Jesus, do we have the patience to wait for his word? What if he doesnt say the word of healing? The word of granting our prayers? Do we pray because we need blessings or we pray because we heed the invitation of Jesus to be with him? Do we feel peace after prayer or we feel in a hurry to finish our prayer? Are we anxious because we demand answered prayers right here and now? Do we relate to Jesus like a give and take relationship- offer prayers and alms and in return Jesus will grant our petitions? Do I allow Jesus to be God in my life, so that in prayers I am simply being there with him? Just being with him, sans petitions, sans complaints, but just simply being there and enjoy his company. This is the relationship of St. Teresa of Avila with Jesus, allowing Jesus to be her God... Fr. Max T. Abalos, SVD (USC, Cebu City)...
