The chiropractic profession is celebrating its 118th year of service to the public Sept. 18. The infamous first adjustment is recognized each year with an annual observance commemorating Sept. 18, 1895, as Chiropractic Founder’s Day when Dr. D.D. Palmer administered his initial specific chiropractic adjustment on Harvey Lillard in Davenport, Iowa. Dr. Palmer delivered the first chiropractic adjustment with the specific intent of realigning a malpositioned vertebra, restoring its normal position, in an attempt to restore a hearing defect. His patient, Harvey Lillard, noted that his hearing that had been lost 17 years earlier returned under Dr. Palmer’s care. Dr. Palmer proceeded to explore and evolve his clinical practice to new methods of replacing spinal bones that were out of position, and experienced positive clinical results in patients with a variety of health concerns. His practice grew, and the profession of chiropractic was launched. Chiropractic is an innovative approach to health and healing that focuses on the relationship between the structures of the human body, particularly the spine, and function coordinated by the nervous system that improves the quality of life by preserving and restoring health. Chiropractic is a drugless, non-surgical science, art and philosophy that is based on the understanding that the human body is a self-healing, self-regulating organism. Doctors of chiropractic seek to restore normal bodily functions through manual adjustments of the segments of the spine to remove nerve interference and allow the body to heal itself. Throughout its history, the chiropractic profession has provided clinically effective, cost-effective and safe care to millions of patients worldwide, and earned the highest patient satisfaction levels of any doctor-level health care science. Every day in the United States alone, more than 1 million consumers of all ages, from newborn infants to the most senior of our citizens, seek the care of a doctor of chiropractic. Chiropractic has become a vital part of the main stream of health care. “Doctors of chiropractic worldwide have every reason to be proud of our profession and the unique contributions chiropractic science continues to make to the lives of millions,” said ICA President Dr. Michael McClean.
