The choice between managing your own affairs or having someone - TopicsExpress

The choice between managing your own affairs or having someone else do that for you seems to me to be a no brainer. I am self employed and happy to have been that for over 30 years and I certainly wouldnt like to have someone now coming in and take it over. But, I remember the time in 1983 when I had a choice, continue to work for someone who I could see was running down that side of the business or take the chance of going self employed. It was a scary time indeed but here I am still self employed and still happy to be so. Where there difficult times? Yes of course there were, the ups and downs of being self employed bring that, its part of the picture. Do I regret being self employed? I have to admit there were times I could see it far enough but when I saw that despite the difficulties, I had the freedom to run the business as I see fit, the freedom to make decisions about my own business, how it went forward, what jobs to take on and what ones not to. I had total control over every aspect of the business and no one could take that away from me. In that time the firm I had worked for and thought about staying with has long since gone bust but I am still here, still with the ups and downs, but still happy that its in my hands and not someone elses. Thats why its a no brainer for me. Despite the uncertainties, the expected hard times, the times where I will not know whats round the corner, I still would advocate that its better to have control over your own future than have someone else do that for you. I started as a NO voter but now see that it was that same fear of the unknown, the uncertainties, the inevitable ups and downs etc that froze me into a default NO position. Not allowing that to dictate to me I saw the potential that my fellow Scots had to go it alone, just as I had done, and knew this was the only way forward, to vote YES and see that potential realised. When I started, I had no money, no backing but I had my skill, I knew my job and was good at what I did. So I invested in that, I invested in making sure that my skills took me through the hard time and like I said earlier, Im still here, still self employed and I am thankful of that. Voting YES for me is not about separatism, or the dislike for another nation, neither is it based on having all the Ts crossed and the Is dotted, for thats not possible. Its about being in control of your own way forward, you deciding what course to take and knowing that whatever happens, you are still in control. That is why Scotland on the 18th Sept will be getting my vote of confidence by placing a big X in the YES box.
