The choice of the Omaha POA! Chuck Hassebrook for Governor Lee Terry for Congress. The Omaha POA is not a partisan organization. We don’t favor one party over the other. We are independents. Quite simply, we support candidates who are right on the issues impacting policing, crime and keeping the public safe from violent and repeat offenders. Chuck Hassebrook is the right man to be our next Governor. Chuck has made it clear that he will excersize his full legal authority to remove good time from inmates who are not “good”. Inmates who refuse to turn themselves around and act inappropriately can look forward to spending their entire sentences in prison under a Hassebrook administration. Chuck also understands that while there must be serious consequences for offenders who act inappropriately, we must also ensure that we are investing in true rehab and job skills training for inmates who truly want to become productive citizens. Our concern over Chuck’s opponent, through a close inspection of the actions and positions of the front groups he has funded, is that he clearly - like current Gov. Dave Heineman - perceives our prisons as just another annoying expense that needs to be cut. “More people in prison equals more unnecessary spending and therefor we must move - and keep - offenders out.” Such an approach is wrong-headed and dangerous. We call prisons “correctional facilities” for a reason folks. We must invest in actually “correcting” inmates bad behavior. If we do, less of them will come back and we will save money later. The ones who refuse to embrace their “correction” must stay in prison and off our streets. Chuck Hassebrook has a similar view and that’s why we support him. Lee Terry is the better candidate for congress. Both Lee Terry and Brad Ashford are both members of the Legislatives branches of federal and state government respectively. Brad Ashford’s flat out - and quite frankly shocking - refusal to reform even a small part of Nebraska’s “good time” laws - illustrates how incredibly out of touch he is with Omaha voters and their concerns over crime and violence. Although rightfully controversial (it’s a controversial issue after all) Lee Terry’s public educational campaign highlighting his opponent’s poor record on this crucial issue will do much to prompt a much more serious, thoughtful and spirited debate over the matter in the next legislative session.
