The city in Eastern Ukraine, Luhansk, where I was born, is today celebrating its 219th birthday. The city was founded in 1795 and has since marked this day every second Sunday of September. How was Luhansks 219th birthday marked this year? According to Informator.lg (informator.lg.ua/?p=30534) there are still problems with the water and electricity supplies in the city. But there are no reports of shootings the night of 12/13 September. According to some rumours the pro-Russian separatists, who are now in control of the city, intended to mark the day with the collective cleanings of city streets, but I wasn’t yet able to find any information as to whether they succeeded to go through with their plans. However, lots of Lugansk citizens who were forced to flee and are now spread all over Ukraine and some even abroad, have on the occasion launched an Internet campaign, under the headline “Lugansk is Ukraine”. As the situation in Eastern Ukraine and in Lugansk escalated during the late spring months, it became more dangerous for pro-Ukrainian and pro-Western spirited Lugansk citizens to advertise and show their position publicly due to risk of being beaten, arrested or kidnapped by the troublemakers and pro-Russian forces in the city.
