The city of Columbus will be resuming their yearly mosquito spraying program ....spraying is one of the least effective methods for mosquito control. For those of you who do not want your property sprayed due to the health concerns, organic gardens, children, pets, environmental impacts, etc., you can opt out by sending a do-not spray request letter the city of Columbus. I know some people do not send in opt-out letters because they know their neighbors have already sent one in. I would like to encourage you to send in an opt-out request so the city can keep track of this neighborhoods concerns about the program. You will need to include the following information to opt out: 1. Your Name (printed) 2. Your Address (printed) 3. Your Phone Number 4. Your Signature 5. Your Email (optional) Mail the request to the following address: Columbus Public Health 501353 240 Parsons Avenue Columbus, OH 43215-5331 Attn: Vector Control Program The most effective way to prevent mosquitoes is by preventing the mosquitoes from breeding in the first place. Spraying is one of the least effective methods of mosquito control. If you do decide to opt-out of mosquito spraying its very important you make sure you dont have standing water on your property throughout the summer. Mosquitoes breed in standing water, so after each rainfall walk around your yard and empty any standing water from possible breeding locations such as old flower pots, buckets, and other containers that collect rain water. Keep your grass cut and weeds under control. Change bird bath water regularly and make sure your gutters are clean, these are major sources of mosquitoes. All rain barrels should have a mosquito dunk placed in them once a month. It was discovered that even rain barrels that claim to be mosquito proof are not. A 6 month supply of Mosquito dunks can be purchased for about $10 at most stores that sell pond supplies. Last year I purchased them at Ace Hardware in Beechwold at Lowes on silver drive.
