The city of Jonesboro, AR is considering changes to how its 1 percent sales tax is allocated, and could ask voters to weigh in at the end of the summer. The 14-year-old permanent tax generates $15 million annually, with half of it restricted to capital improvements, and the other half going to general revenue. As another, separate sales tax is set to expire in December, the city would like to call a special election in which voters could do away with the capital improvement restriction of the 1 percent tax, directing all of it to the general revenue fund. Weve got to make sure that the city can operate under the one-cent permanent tax like the half-cent is not even going to be there, Councilman Gene Vance says. ow.ly/wACZk
