The claim that depression is a chemical imbalance has one weakness - TopicsExpress

The claim that depression is a chemical imbalance has one weakness - there is no proof whatsoever. Recently the British Medical Journal issued an extraordinary challenge to the drug industry - they asked them to provide one scrap of evidence that for those with mild to moderate depression anti-depressants were of any benefit. I think they are still waiting. There is plenty of evidence that some people with certain types of thought pattern are likely to suffer with depression, but that wont help drug companies make money. There is plenty of evidence that social relations, diet, light levels, sleep quality, etc etc all affect our vulnerability to depression. This is a disorder of the modern world, and relatively rare even just a hundred years ago. There are some people who are likely to have symptoms that SEEM like depression, and this because they neurological conditions or medical disorders; but I have yet to see hard evidence of there being a chemical imbalance. There are treatments out there that have good success rates, but they have to compete against drug companies. Not easy. Alan Davidson
