The continuing assessment of federal recognition...in promoting - TopicsExpress

The continuing assessment of federal recognition...in promoting our rights to choose our own membership (an indigenous right), tribes can so easily dump members from their rolls. The International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (rights of people who belong to internationally recognized states) gives people a right to citizenship - i.e., you cant just throw people out of your country because you dont want them or because you disagree with their politics. One right is powerfully upheld (indigenous rights) - as we see in the two articles below, but in a way that has negative impacts on people, while the other is not (Inter. Cov. on Civil and Political rights) - you see people being denied their citizenship rights by their internationally recognized countries all the time. Do we want the right to define our own membership? And in any case - who is going to protect our rights at the end of the day? Ive got TWO articles linked here, not just one: news.msn/in-depth/disenrollment-leaves-natives-culturally-homeless nytimes/2011/12/13/us/california-indian-tribes-eject-thousands-of-members.html?pagewanted=all&_r=0
