The controversial Sedition Act 1948 should be repealed and a National Harmony Act introduced in its place, says a new pressure group, the Centre For A Better Tomorrow (CENBET). The centres co-President, Gan Ping Sieu said that back in July 11, 2012, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak had promised to the public that the Sedition Act would be repealed. It is the time for the Prime Minister to carry out this long outstanding pledge in the interest of the country, he said. Gan said the prosecution of Seputeh MP Teresa Kok yesterday under the Sedition Act has again sending an incoherent message to the public. To me, Koks appearance in the satirical video is just a production in bad taste, whether it amounts to seditious conduct is highly questionable, he added. Furthermore, Kok is not the only public figure who has been charged under the Act, ever since the Prime Minister had pledged to do away with that piece of legislation. Many Pakatan Rakyat legislators and social activists have also been charged under this controversial legislation, he stressed. The Attorney-General (AG), as the law officer of the nation, has a constitutional role to play to ensure selective prosecution does not take place, he said, adding that it is an affront to justice and the rule of law which this nation is built on. Yesterday, Kok was charged under Section 4 (1) (C) of Sedition Act for uploading a satirical video titled Teresa Kok: Onederful Malaysia CNY 2014.” at Kuala Lumpur Session Court. She pleaded not guilty and was released on a bail of RM4,000.
