The country that I come from doesnt pay too much attention to the issues regarding environment. In terms of garbage disposal and classification, low awareness is no doubt predictable. Since I came to Canada, Ive been influenced by the way people do things here. They focus on all the details I failed to take into consideration. This spring, Zero Waste System was initiated on campus, which is program that is aimed to reduce and classify garbage more efficiently. In the past, there was not enough signage that tells people what goes into which bin, thus making people just toss garbage randomly, which was what I used to do. With the help of the new signs, and a class I was taking last term called environmental stewardship, I began to blend into the culture where people are actually taking efforts to focus on the little details. I realized that even a coffee cup consists of three parts that go into three different bins. I learnt that if I toss garbage randomly, it will increase the cost of garbage disposal. Things like that have successfully drawn my attention and Ive determined to continue on this environment-friendly path.
