The courses were offered in Mexico in which 143 representatives of the Caribbean participated. The Inter- American Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture (IICA) and the Secretariat of Agriculture, Livestock, Rural Development, Fisheries and Food (SAGARPA), carried out an evaluation of the first and second stage of the technical cooperation project Mexico-Caribbean countries, which consisted in offering them training courses to meet specific needs of these countries. The courses looked to guarantee the transfer of experiences in an effort to contribute to form the human resource that boosts new agriculture in the Caribbean Region, with its consequent economic impact in agricultural procedures. The initiative came about from a technical cooperation agreement between the Secretariat of Agriculture, Livestock, Rural Development, Fisheries and Food of Mexico (SAGARPA) and IICA, which was signed last April 29th in Yucatan, in the framework of the III Mexico-CARICOM Summit. At the end of the courses the participants elaborated project proposals that they took back to their Countries, as well as the molecular techniques to fight the meleira virus that affects fruits like pawpaw and the fight against the lethal yellowing disease, a disease which affects coconut trees. Other project proposals are the reproductive management of sheep, application of organic hydroponics, intensive and protected agriculture, home and backyard gardens and the integration of products and local artisans linked to the chain of touristic value. In the third stage of the program Mexican investigators will carry out visits to the Caribbean to collaborate the transfer of knowledge to the Caribbean Countries. This cooperation program was developed through the first stage via the application of six courses, where 143 representatives from 15 Caribbean Countries and Caribbean Agricultural Development Institute (CARDI) attained knowledge, experience and capabilities from their Mexican counterparts. In the case of Saint Lucia sixteen (16) technicians received training in the abovementioned areas.
