The crucifixion of Jesus September 14, 2014, Share this: JOHN 19:25-27 Standing by the cross of Jesus were His mother and His mother’s sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary of Magdala. When Jesus saw His mother and the disciple there whom He loved, He said to His mother, “Woman, behold, your son.” Then He said to the disciple, “Behold, your mother.” And from that hour the disciple took her into His home. REFLECTIONS JESUS SAW HIS MOTHER. The devotion to Our Lady of Sorrows was adopted in 1238 by the Servite Order in Tuscany, Italy, who helped spread it all over the world. Seven swords are depicted piercing Mary’s heart, symbolizing her seven sorrows, namely: the prophecy of Simeon (cf Lk 2:35); the flight to Egypt to evade Herod’s men searching for the infant Jesus (cf Mt 2:13); the loss of the child Jesus in the temple (cf Lk 2:43-45); the meeting of Jesus and Mary on the way to Calvary; the death of Jesus on the cross (cf Jn 19:30); Mary receiving the body of Jesus in her arms; and the burial of Jesus in the tomb (cf Jn 19:40-42). The Mother of God, the first disciple, shared the passion of Jesus for our redemption. Luis Antonio Cardinal Tagle of Manila emphasizes that the feast of Our Lady of Sorrows does not glorify sadistic or masochistic practices. Rather, it shows us that sorrow could lead us to conversion and holiness. The loss of a loved one or home or job could be a purifying experience that prods us to reorient our life. By reflecting on Mary’s sorrows, we learn how to cope with and face gracefully our own trials and sufferings and sanctify our life to Christ. SOURCE: “365 Days with the Lord 2014,” .
