The dairy fraternity is defending their territory - nothing more , nothing less. Actually there were 1.65 million tiny bobby calves sent to slaughter last year whose only crime was being born. They are considered waste by the dairy industry and virtually worthless in money terms. They are what is considered nothing more than a by-product of the dairy industry. If farmers were to consider their value in terms of sentient beings with their own interest in living then they could not do what they do. Effectively, they are taking another life. The normal commercial practice for slaughtering these babies is to stun them and then dress them. The average bobby calf weighs 30.1 kg (Fresian x Jersey) and 23.9 (Jersey). After bobbies are slaughtered they are used of a variety of purposes. The meat, livers, skins and bells (abomasums) form which the rennin is extracted are all used. But the slaughter process is not humane. From removal from Mum to transport to slaughter these babies are stressed and their short lives are nothing but horrific. For example the effects of various aspects of electrical stunning and slaughter were studied in more than 4,000 sheep and calves, the majority of which were being processed in different New Zealand meat export works. Electrical stunning must induce cardiac dysfunction to ensure that calves do not regain sensibility during currrently employed slaughter processes. Electrical stunning produces cardiac inhibition provided that electrodes are properly positioned and sufficient electrical current is applied. Electrocardiograms (ECG) of electrically stunned animals demonstrated that cardiac dysfunction can be readily detected by the use of stethoscope. However, the reactions of stunned and slaughtered animals to various nervous stimuli are unreliable determinants of insensibility. The significance of these findings needs to be considered in relation to the undeniable abuse occurring.
