The dark night of the soul (Psalm 130 and St. John of the Cross) In the darkness does my soul wait Waiting for you my God O how I long for the light of your love For the hope longed for, to be realized O how I long for You As the watchman waits for the dawn Compare shadow in Psalm 23 with darkness in Psalm 130 The commonality is that in darkness You long for the relief of the presence of God We may dream of days with no night For in the night we grow anxious In the night our imaginations more easily hide truth In the night it is harder to see what is waiting Yet a day with no night is not reality We will all experience a dark night of the soul A time where our soul longs for the grace union of our Savior To live in the false reality of a constant day Is to deny the reality of our need for Him In the night, I hope for the dawn When the Son breaks through the darkness When the warm colors of grace and love flow over The cold desperate broken landscape of my heart If it were not for the night We would never see the beauty of the dawn Were it not for pain and sorrow We would never grasp the beauty of grace and love Were it not for the shadow of death We would never see the light of life My soul longs for dawn My heart longs for wholeness May I watch for the dawn And not be consumed by despair For one day My friend ( Gavin ) and I will once again Watch the Son rise together May you have hope in the dark May you have healing in your pain May you see the beauty a midst the broken May you journey through the dark night of the soul Soli Deo Gloria Britton
