The day before, 16-year-old David had his first fender-bender, so I was taking the Dodge Ram to get an insurance estimate in Midlothian. The news broke in as I was waiting for a left turn; I thought it was some kind of War of the Worlds hoax. As the truck was evaluated, I watched a tiny tv in the car dealers office, then drove home in disbelief. Our friend and farrier, Bob White, was in the barn shoeing 4 horses; I spent the day running back and forth from house to barn to keep him updated, though he was, as usual, listening to Rush Limbaugh as he worked.. O, beautiful, for spacious skies, for amber waves of grain. O beautiful, for heroes proved, in liberating strife. Who more than self their country loved, and mercy more than life.
