The death of FAMOUS people (or the relatives of famous people) ends up becoming a trending topic. In fact, even FAKE people die and trend on FB. In fact, Archie from the comics is trending right now. The plans is to kill off his character heroically. So yesterday I poke fun at the fact that a person with a name that sounds like Gandalf from J. R. R. Tolkien s novels The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings had died. Never heard of her. I was just amazed that it became a trending topic. I am pretty culturally astute, but I never heard of her. The fact is that every day tens of thousands of people die who will never trend on Facebook. But their death is also sad to those who knew them. They also had an impact on the world. As many of you know, Ive been conducting lots of funerals recently. I have done over 250 in my career - and about 40 of them in the last couple of years. In every funeral, I aim to find out facts and information about the person in question to add some joy and humor to the story of their life and passing. This has even included poking fun at a nickname or two. I have one woman in my church who is 15 minutes late to everything. I have told her that when she dies, should I be the one to officiate, I plan to start fifteen minutes late. What I said about Peaches was not disrespectful. I have removed the post since it evidently offended people who also did not know this person, But I am doubling down on the fact that our fleshly mortality should not make humor off limits. The similarity of this persons name and the Wizard Gandalf struck me as funny. There was NOTHING profane, insulting, or rude about what I said. Seriously, some of my friends need to get a life.
