The decision to have a state funeral for James Flaherty drives home some vital issues. There have only been ten such events for cabinet ministers in the history of Canada. Providing such a rare honour in this case is, without question, about officially sanctioning the role that he played as a leading architect of austerity and social regression in the Ontario Harris Government and at the Federal level. It is not Flahertys individual human life that is being placed on this pedestal but the public, political role he carried out. In that capacity, he inflicted poverty and suffering on communities and those who carry on his work look to take the process even further. It is not just appropriate but imperative that those capable of speaking out against the political agenda this personified not be silenced by a false sense of etiquette demanded of us by those who carry on the work of James Flaherty.
