The dedicated men and women of the Sheriffs Crime Lab work every day to develop evidence that may either help in the prosecution of a criminal or in the exoneration of an innocent person. Today, even the tiniest spots of blood, or a saliva stain on a cigarette butt can be used to identify someone through DNA. The Crime Laboratorys DNA Unit develops DNA profiles from evidence, and searches the profiles in a DNA database called CODIS (Combined DNA Index System). The evidence profile developed in the lab may be a hit to a known offender in the database. Or the evidence profile may link to another unsolved case, thereby establishing a series. CODIS is used to identify suspects in homicides, rapes and other serious assaults, but the most common crimes solved using CODIS are residential and commercial burglaries. These cases are important because they directly affect the quality of life in our neighborhoods. The Sheriffs Crime Lab is accredited by the American Society of Crime Laboratory Directors Laboratory Accreditation Board since 2003.
