The difference between praying in tongues, {by the Holy Spirit} within and speaking in tongues: About the Holy Spirit interceding on our behalf when we have problems with what to say in prayer: Notice in verse 26, the Spirit makes intercession for us with groanings and which cannot be uttered. In other words, we cannot properly express our feelings with human words and thoughts, so the Spirit does this for us. Praying in the Spirit is something done within us by the Holy Spirit Jesus gave to all upon His death and resurrection. It is not the same thing as speaking in tongues. Romans 8:26-28 (KJV) 26 Likewise the Spirit also helpeth our infirmities: for we know not what we should pray for as we ought: but the Spirit itself maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered. 27 And he that searcheth the hearts knoweth what is the mind of the Spirit, because he maketh intercession for the saints according to the will of God. 28 And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose. The tongues of fire given to the Apostles in the upper room was a gift of speaking languages in the native tongue of people who did not speak the same language as the Apostles, in other words..foreigners. This was speaking in tongues. Acts 2:3-10 (KJV) 3 And there appeared unto them cloven tongues like as of fire, and it sat upon each of them. 4 And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance. 5 And there were dwelling at Jerusalem Jews, devout men, out of every nation under heaven. 6 Now when this was noised abroad, the multitude came together, and were confounded, because that every man heard them speak in his own language. 7 And they were all amazed and marvelled, saying one to another, Behold, are not all these which speak Galilaeans? 8 And how hear we every man in our own tongue, wherein we were born? 9 Parthians, and Medes, and Elamites, and the dwellers in Mesopotamia, and in Judaea, and Cappadocia, in Pontus, and Asia, 10 Phrygia, and Pamphylia, in Egypt, and in the parts of Libya about Cyrene, and strangers of Rome, Jews and proselytes,
