The documentary “The Girls in the Band” tells the largely forgotten story of women who played in jazz bands decades ago. All-female bands of the era were considered novelty acts in the 1930s and ’40s, and the film related how one was able to break the color line. The director of the film, Judy Chaikin said, A friend of mine told me that she had run into a woman who said she had been a big band drummer in the 1940s. And I grew up in a family of musicians. I had been around big bands all my life. I had been a trumpet player as a kid and I quit because I knew it was no career for a woman. And when she told me that, I said I never heard of such a thing. So I started doing a little research on it. Pulling together the film wasnt easy. Chaikin said that there are only about 20 female jazz musicians from the mid-20th century still living, and among those only about half a dozen who were able to participate.
