The drive from Shillong to Agartala had to be aborted at Unakoti Archological site Tripura due to extremely bad roads. No wonder militancy rears its head in the NE. But every cloud has its silver lining. The Unakoti site is phenominal. Huge bas reliefs and rock cut carvjngs, whose origin remains a mystery to archeologists. Photos will be uploaded soon. The Border Security Force and the Meghalaya Police insisted that we turn back as the road goes through thick jungle where dacoits operate. No villages for miles. An Airtel engineer was recently kidnapped there. The BSF then arranged for two local villagers of the Bru tribe to sit in the car and ordered us to leave the jungle area before sunset. We drove at breakneck speed and cleared the forest area on a road that does not exist to arrive in Aizwal at 12 midnite. We had to give a written undertaking that Meghalaya government is not responsible if anything happens to us. An unforgettable adventure. We are in Aizawl today. The car has gone for a service. Tomorrow we drive Aizawl to Imphal and am told again through very bad roads! Since mobile signals are bad, there will be some delay in postings and video/photo uploads.
