The drum groove few can play? 25 years ago I published my first book (and video). It was called Metalmorphosis, and both the book and vid featured this crazy, difficult 4-way independence groove called The Monster. I used to perform it live at all of my drum clinics and it was always a crowd favorite. Through the years, however, I have only known of two other drummers who could actually play it. (Im guessing there are more, but there have only been two who Ive actually seen play it.) Now - lets make that three! Cj Burton is a long-time friend and colleague of mine who just posted en EXCELLENT demonstration of The Monster. This is a rock-solid version with cool production value; you can see each limb in a separate screen shot. Killer! CJs a great player, and I really appreciate his demo of this on the 25th anniversary of the Metalmorphosis project. Thanks, CJ... PS. For those who have asked, I actually created The Monster over the course of several all-night woodshed sessions, in the dorm practice rooms of The Berklee College of Music in Boston, circa fall 1982! (Goddamn, Im getting old!!!)
