The earliest roots of emotional intelligence can be traced to Charles Darwins work on the importance of emotional expression for survival and adaptation. Survival and Adaptation are basic and fundamental traits of leaders . Survival and adaptation of leaders in social environment depends on their emotional intelligence which includes interpersonal intelligence (the capacity to understand the intentions, motivations ,needs and desires of other people) and interpersonal intelligence (the capacity to understand oneself, to appreciate ones feelings, courage, risk and motivations). Thus emotional intelligence is source of emotional competences. Emotional competence refers to ones ability to express or release ones inner feelings (emotions). It implies an ease around others and determines ones ability to effectively and successfully lead and express. It is described as the essential social skills to recognize, interpret, and respond constructively to emotions in our self and others.Emotional competencies are learned capabilities that must be worked on and can be developed to achieve outstanding performance.Daniel Goleman posits that individuals are born with a general emotional intelligence that determines their potential for learning emotional competencies. These potentials could be realized by learning and developing emotional competencies. The model introduced by Daniel Goleman(what makes a leader) focuses on EI as a wide array of competencies and skills that drive leadership performance. Golemans model outlines five main EI constructs ..... /1/ Self-awareness – the ability to know ones emotions, strengths, weaknesses, drives, values and goals and recognize their impact on others while using gut feelings to guide decisions. /2/ Self-regulation – involves controlling or redirecting ones disruptive emotions and impulses and adapting to changing circumstances. /3/Social skill – managing relationships to move people in the desired direction /4/ Empathy - considering other peoples feelings especially when making decisions and /5/ Motivation - being driven to achieve for the sake of achievement.
