The editorial staff writes in “The notion that it [the paperwork requirement] substantially burdens religious liberty is ridiculous.” This is a very vapid statement, especially given the extent to which the Roman Catholic Christian Church has gone to define religious liberty, especially in the Second Vatican Council’s council document entitled “DIGNITATIS HUMANAE,” which is available on the Vatican’s website. Given DIGNITATIS HUMANAE, and the later encyclical, HUMANAE VITAE, that deals with birth control, it can be seen that the dignity and freedom of the person are compromised with the use of contraception. Since the United States has no philosophic definition for “religious liberty,” DIGNITATIS HUMANAE, should be used to define “religious liberty.” Further, if you are not using DIGNITATIS HUMANAE, I am not sure what you are using to define “religious liberty,” because this matter can be very complicated. I, personally, think that liberty and dignity are very important, and I am very glad that the Church does as well!
